CHAPTER 17

Dean

Forrester-Lexso Estate

Clang.

Dean raised his shield in time to catch Anoka’s wooden sword. He rolled, trying to escape the pressure she was applying. Her fighting style was so fluid it left him defenseless with every different weapon he tested. He stopped his tumble sideways to find her wooden sword inches from his eyes.

Defeated again, he sighed in frustration. The mace had actually jabbed into the leather armor covering his stomach as he rolled. He didn’t like the ball on the end of a stick. Even if it was useful for breaking bones, it was too clunky for him.

“Not your worst,” Anoka admitted, never scolding or correcting at this early stage.

She flipped her wooden sword onto her shoulder while walking toward the training weapon storage rack. Dean picked himself off the rough, dry desert terrain, scraping the sand and grit from his leather armor.

“I felt clunky with this thing,” Dean grunted. He decided the mace was not for him and walked to store the weapon back in the rack. “I was so natural with my trident, I flowed with it in my hands.”

“It’s day one Dean. I can have a wooden trident made; though it’d need guards above where your hands rest. If not, any sword could simply carve down the shaft and remove your arm,” Anoka said, handing him a spear. “I hate training new champions on two handed weapons. Maybe a half size trident and a light shield will be better for you.”

They were going through most basic of motions right now, at half speed or less, inside the covered parking space that stood in front of The Forrester-Lexso Estate. The renaming had been made official this morning, after a very long night of entertaining guests.

Before Dean retired last evening, though, he’d ensured Anoka had his powered suit, his shuttle codes—with instructions on how to use them—and a few tokens worth of gems to open an account. That was going to be Anoka’s morning task, for the next... forever. Get up, go to Mixonia, deposit gems, and come back with needed supplies.

She had purchased a few sets of simple weighted leathers to mimic armor and a wide selection of wooden weapons to test Dean’s reflexes and natural prowess. Dean was wearing leather leggings and a long sleeve tunic that, while not too heavy, made him sweat. The outfit simply was not breathable.

An insanely tight belt wrapped above his hips and squeezed on his stomach. He’d grumbled about the fact that it was crushing his guts, but Anoka promised him a loose belt would be deadly.

“Why do I feel like we’ve regressed, like a thousand years?” Dean muttered to himself disparagingly.

“You know the common denominator among all species and worlds is swords and basic science, less magic. Well, metal, leather, staffs, and basic magic from your core. You cannot bring weapons or material in from outside, other than specifically approved exceptions,” Anoka lectured. “Even then, exceptions are all limited and must be specially forged in Mixonia by a crafter. Your metal trident, for example, will take a week or two to be forged.
